Blue Gill  are my favourite  fish to catch on my 2 weight TFO. You have done a tremendous  job of managing and producing  those those prize Blue Gills.  We'll done and keep  making us jealous.  Love the pictures  of your fish. The bass look healthy  too.

We are harvesting fish now and the key to continued growth will be successful management/manipulation of the population.  We've had several family eatin' gatherings and the first thing folks do upon arrival is head for the pond.  After the first two events, all are well versed in what to keep and what to put in the "eating" bucket.  They have seen what we have accomplished in size and really enjoy catching and releasing the larger bluegills.  Basically, they have "bought" in to the deal.  Results can win over the most skeptical.

Yesterday the bride wanted to fish so I grabbed scale and measuring board and walked down to the pond as I'd not sampled the population for a month.  She was using worms on a light spinning rod, which is the best method to sample fish that are being feed regularly.  The second fish she caught put on a pretty good show before I slipped the net under it and when it first flashed that broad side, I knew this might be the one we have been waiting on.  I quickly measured and weighed the bluegill.  It was a large female, taping 9.75 inches and weighed 16 ounces and a hair on the kitchen scale I have been using.  I was controlling the bluegill while the bride checked the weight.  I asked her "How much?"  She replied casually, "Sixteen ounces."  I glanced up and told her we needed to weigh it one more time.  The answer was the same, "Sixteen ounces and a hair."  I leaned over and read the scale myself.  YES, 16 ounces.  :)  The next we weighed was a large male that taped 9 inches and some, pushing the needle down to 12 ounces.

The thickness, mass and width from top to bottom of this fish could not be captured by the camera, one had to hold the sucker in your hands to fully appreciated the size of a 16 ounce bluegill.  My wife is holding the first "pound" bluegill from our pond and in the other is my scale with the 12 ounce male she caught.  The scale is shows about 16 ounces but I had rotated the bowl so she could take a photo and in doing so, it moved the scale some.  You can get a pretty good look at the mass these big gills are developing.  Our gills haven't added much length since they reached 8 inches but are gaining lots of weight with each increment in length.

We set out to grow 16 ounce bluegills and it only took two summers after stocking the fish in our pond.  They will have been in our pond two years in late February 2018.  Basically, they are three year old fish.

Now, we will see just how big they will grow.

Sounds great, Rick. Weather has been HOT and windy, after the wife got her back problems smoothed out. Weather forecast is better for the end of next week and a fishing trip is in the works. Will give you an update on results. Take care, John.

Went out to a pond yesterday.  Wind blowing out of the south about 15 mph.
Cast flies into the wind and then let them drop.  When the line moved to side side I set the hook.
Worked like a charm.  Caught a lot of fish and gave some to two friends that showed up at the pond.
Have not converted them to fly fishing.
Got fish on a Godlie Jr. boa yarn flies, furl tailed mohair leech and a woven bodied fly.

Went out of a pond.  Took a long time to find the fish and/or the pattern they wanted.
Got some nice crappie during the last hour.
All on a sparkle eyelash yarn fly.

This is for all the Warmfly members in Harvey's path, wife and I both send prayers for all Y'all's safety. The news from that part of the country has not been good at all. Wife and I are both familiar with the area, we grew up there, but moved to Mo, after I got out of the USAF. Please all, be safe and check in with us when you can. May God keep you in his safe arms. Take care, John.
