Red Stick Fly Fishers - Fall Catch-n-Eat
November 10-12, 2017

Free event - open to RSFF members, and members of other recognized clubs, and their guests

Cool weather is almost here, and that means it's time to start planning for our annual Fall Saltwater Catch-n-Eat. Without doubt, this is typically the best RSFF Saltwater event, year-in-and-year out, in terms of number of fish caught and most pleasurable fishing conditions.

For the new folks, this is an informal fishing event.  Fishing takes place along Highway 1 from Galliano south to Grand Isle. Find a partner(s) then group with others who fish by your style - boat, off-road, puddle craft. Everyone handles their own reservations at a favorite place of stay. Popular places are Boudreaux's Condeauxs, Galliano Inn, Catfish Lake Cabins, Days Inn all of which are in Golden Meadow. Also popular is Boudreaux's Motel in Leeville and Blue Dolphin Inn in Grand Isle.

We will check shrimp availability at the Seafood Shed when we get closer to the date and I'll post an updates on that.

On Friday evening, we usually gather at one of the local restaurants in Golden Meadow and get fishing reports from the folks who fished Friday. We also exchange tips, techniques, and locations from those who did well.

On Saturday evening, there's the traditional fish & shrimp fry. The location will most likely be Boudreaux's Condeaux's in Golden Meadow.  We ask everyone with enough fish to make a fresh fish contribution.  The main course will be fresh fried fish fillets, shrimp, and potatoes.  Also, garlic bread and eggplant (if available).

Saltwater Chair Randy Leonpacker will be looking for volunteers to bring their cooking rigs (burner, pot, gas) and cook.  Sometimes folks ask if they can bring something to the fry. This is OPTIONAL. The main course is well covered.  Additional items might be hors d'oeuvres, snacks, salad, cookies, dessert, etc. But again, this is OPTIONAL. You do not need to bring anything (other than your own drinks) for this event.

Make sure you all bring your own soft drinks or alternative beverage. You may also want to bring a couple of folding chairs as seating is likely to be limited.

Catch-and-Eat outing Preparation Checklist:

General items:
- fly rod, suggested 6wt - 8wt, bring at least 2
- fly reels, saltwater proof
- leader material, recommended tippet 10-12 lbs, fluorocarbon for clear water spots
- sink tip connector or intermediate line (if fishing deeper holes)
- speck flies: clousers, pencil poppers or skipping bugs, gurglers, baitfish patterns
- redfish flies: spoonflies, charlies, seaducers, tarpon flies, small poppers
- hat:  preferably quick-dry long-brimmed or wide-brimmed with strap
- shirts, shorts or pants that quick-dry (nylon or polyester)
- sunglasses, polarized
- sunscreen, suggest minimum 30 SPF waterproof
- bug deet or Amber Romance or Swamp Swatter
- disinfectant and first aid kit
- water shoes  (wading booties, pool shoes, clogs)
- ice chest
- beach towels (to dry off and cover seats)
- filet knife and knife glove
- gallon zip lock bags to put your filets in
- Gatorade, Powerade, bottled water to avoid dehydration
- fishing maps
- fishing license
- clothes (non-fishing)

Boat or canoe or kayak items:
- life preservers
- paddles
- seat
- anchor or Cajun anchor
- trolling motor / mount
- battery / battery charger
- net
- fish stringer or fish bag or kayak-size ice chest
- lip gripper and/or fish pliers
- dry storage: dry bag or Pelican box or watertight box

Comfort items:
- lawn chair or portable chair    (BYOC)
- drinks / ice chest for drinks    (BYOD)
- fishing glove or tape (to protect stripping finger)
- fish towel
- camera
- medical / health: bandages, aspirin, antiseptic. First aid kit helpful.
- fly tying bag (bring only what you need)
- extra cash or check to buy shrimp to take home (some places don't accept credit cards)

Cooking items - Cooks provide:
- pot
- lighter for propane tank
- skimmer
- temperature gauge
- detergent / scrub pad
- portable table (optional)
